Guidelines for residents

* More detailed explanation will be provided by the House staff when you move in to your residence. 

  1. Occupancy period (It is necessary to submit an ResidencyApplication for International House Residencybefore moving in.)
    As a Rule, accommodations in the International House are avalable to international students enrolled at the University for a period lasting from one month to one year; and to researchers for a period lasting from 14days to one year. However, you can only stay for the length of time shown in the Residence Permit you receive.
     
  2. Expenses on moving in
    You will be required to pay accommodation fees and various other expenses when you move in. These fees are payable to the office at International House, by the 25th of each month in the case of accommodation, and by the day specified in the payment notice in the case of rentals. Payments for August and September should be made in July. 
    Note that further details will be provided by the staff when you move in.
     
  3. Keys to units
    Tenants are personally responsible for keeping the room key and the card key for building entrance until the day they move out. If you happen to lose or damage keys, please report this promptly to the office.
     
  4. On-site inspection of room facilities and equipment by staff
    When it is necessary to inspect facilities or equipment, the office staff or inspectors will enter your room with your consent.
    Note, however, that in the case of a fire or other emergency, they may need to enter your room without your consent. Please keep this in mind.
     
  5. Temporary absences (e.g., to return to your home country)
    If you intend to be absent for a significant period of time, be sure to notify the office of your plans (destinations, dates, etc.)
     
  6. Prohibition against overnight guests
    Please note that if friends or acquaintances visit you in your room it is strictly forbidden for them to stay overnight.
     
  7. Illness
    1. Any resident who becomes ill can receive emergency medical care at the Tottori University Health Science Center. The center also provides medical treatment and health consultations.

      If telephoning for a taxi, please try to speak as follows:
      "Kochira wa, kuko no chikaku ni aru Tottori Daigaku Kokusai Koryu Kaikan desu. Shikyu ichi-dai onegaishimasu.  こちら は,くうこう の ちかく に ある とっとり だいがく こくさい こうりゅう かいかん です。 しきゅう いちだい おねがいします。"
      If telephoning for an ambulance, please try to speak as follows:
      "Kochira wa, kuko no chikaku ni aru Tottori Daigaku Kokusai Koryu Kaikan desu. [SPECIFY PROBLEM] de komatte-imasu. Kyukyusha wo onegaishimasu.  こちら は, くうこう の ちかく に ある とっとり こくさい こうりゅう かいかん です。 ○○○ で こまっています。 きゅうきゅうしゃ を おねがいします。 "
       
  8. Fire and disaster prevention
    Residents should maintain constant vigilance regarding the danger of fires or other disasters, by keeping their residences clean and tidy, by being prepared for the possibility of an earthquake, fire or other emergency, and by taking care to prevent fires from gas and electrical appliances, etc.  * Smorking is prohibited in the House.
    Furthermore, if a fire or other emergency occurs, you should push the button of the fire alarm system immediately, report the matter to the fire station, and cooperate with other residents to make use of the available fire extinguishers to put out or contain the fire. If the fire cannot be controlled and the situation becomes dangerous, evacuate the building as quickly as possible.

    If reporting a fire by telephone, try to speak as follows: 
    "Kochira wa, kuko no chikaku ni aru Tottori Daigaku Kokusai Koryu Kaikan desu. Kasai ga hassei-shimashita. Daishikyu kite-kudasai.  こちら は, くうこう の ちかく に ある とっとり だいがく こくさい こうりゅう かいかん です。 かさい が はっせい しました。 だいしきゅう きて ください。"
    If reporting an incident to the police by telephone, try to speak as follows: 
    "Kochira wa, kuko no chikaku ni aru Tottori Daigaku Kokusai Koryu Kaikan desu. Jiken ga hassei-shimashita. Daishikyu kite-kudasai.  こちらは, くうこう の ちかく に ある とっとり だいがく こくさい こうりゅう かいかん です。 じけん が はっせい しました。 だいしきゅう きて ください。"
    Attempt to describe the situation as well as you can.
    It is important to carefully note the locations of fire extinguishers and learn the proper way to use them, so that you can act calmly in an emergency situation.

    Fire extinguishers are located in each room (one per unit) and also in corridors. Please check these.
     
  9. Meetings and events
    If you plan to host a party, meeting, or event of any other kind at International House, you must submit an Application for Meeting Room UsageApplication for Meeting Room Usage. You must receive permission at least three days before the planned meeting. Without an approved application you cannot use the room.
     
  10. Theft and lost and found property
    To protect against theft, always lock your room whenever you leave it, even if only a short time, and keep your key securely. In the event of a theft, or if you lose or find property, report the matter immediately to the office and follow their instructions.
     
  11. Waste disposal
    Kitchen waste from cooking and other waste must be placed into the plastic bags provided by International House and put out at the garbage disposal site on the west side of the buildings.
     
  12. Use of facilities, equipment and fixtures
    Residents should take care to keep all facilities, equipment, and fixtures in good condition. Note that it is prohibited to modify or remodel rooms - i.e., rooms must be maintained in their original condition. In addition, no equipment or fixtures may be taken outside of the room.
    If you lose, damage, or deface any of the facilities, equipment, or fixtures at International House, whether intentionally or not, you will be held responsibly for covering the loss or damage.
     
  13. Punishment by eviction
    Any resident who fails to pay accommodation or rental fees, or other due expenses, or who violates regulations that apply to all residents, may be ordered to move out of International House. 
     
  14. Moving out procedures
    At the end of the agreed occupancy period, or if you intend to move out before the end of the period, contact the office by the 20th of the month before you plan to move out. Then fill out the Notice of Moving Out and submit it to the office.
    Prior to moving out, pay all due board or rent and other expenses for the month, clean your unit, restore all equipment and fixtures to their original condition, return the keys, and request an inspection, as directed by the staff. After all this has been satisfactorily completed, you can move out.
